Throughout the year, the ASUW Student Senate has considered and passed legislation on a wide variety of issues.  This graphic gives a recap of the variety of legislation that was passed into official student opinion during the 20th session.  Months of the year are labeled to show the progression of time and the relative timing of when various legislation was brought to the senate floor, showing the evolution of debates we hosted.

Displays that exploit the visual potential of time

Critique #1

My critic liked the display with the staggered orbs and the yellow line best.  He questioned whether or not the vertical lines marking each month were necessary but agreed that they create more visual interest and create more draw to each orb.

I agree that the display with the physical timeline has more depth and visual interest to it.  Additionally, the vertical lines, while not entirely necessary, help create more cohesiveness and interest, a well as some vertical movement.

How I emulated my models:

To follow the theme of purple text encased in a purple container, shown in my color model, I put resolutions inside orbs outlined in purple.  Titles and more prominent text are in the bolder primary font, while lengthier texts are in the italic serif secondary font, to mimic my type model.  As with all other graphics, and as is shown in the color model, I used the grey-lavender color for my background.

Second Iteration

Critique #2

She wasn't so sure about the italics of the font and said that the text would look better in regular type.  Both displays match the color model, with the exception that white isn't used as a background color in any.  Both are interesting, she isn't sure which looks better.

Again, I agree that the italic font just didn't make much sense here.  Despite it matching the type model, I changed it to be regular style, to make it more readable and appealing.  I also increased the font size for readability.  Additionally, I agree that white orb background don't match the color model.  To remedy this, I changed the backgrounds to the violet color.  This is also more consistent with my relationship dispaly and a softer, less harsh look.

Critique #3

She mentioned that the display without any yellow doesn't fully follow the color model since it's missing a color.  She suggested that I put a yellow horizontal line behind the orbs to create a visual continuum and more of a timeline feel, as well as to incorporate the yellow color.

I agree that incorporating the yellow color creates more depth and visual interest.  It also best matches my color model.  Both my prior critics said the display with the yellow timeline was better anyways, and to ensure yellow is included, I've decided to move forward with the timeline display.

Critique #3

My last critic liked he graphic overall.  He liked the staggering of orbs and the two fonts work well together.  While changing the background of the orbs makes the orbs match the color model better, it seems that there is no use of purple text on a yellow shape in the color model.  Perhaps the month labels need to be in white, for consistency.

He made a correct observation that dark purple on a yellow background does not appear in my color model, thus I changed the font color for months to white.  This should not only better match the color model, but also better match several other graphics on the final product and I feel it looks nicer.

Critique #2

My second critic said she liked the white backgorund to the orbs better because it created more depth, however she understands that it is necessary to match the color model.  To match the type model, shouldn't all League font be in caps?

I hadn't even realized this point on the capitalization of text in the League font.  She is infact correct that all text in the League font on the type model is capitalized.  I'm going to play around with all my final graphics to see if capitalizing the rest of my graphics would make sense.

Critique #1

My first critic said they liked the purple backgrounds to the orbs better, and that they best match the color model.  Additionally, the transition of text away from italics was a good call, although it doesn't fully match the type model.  Perhaps some of the text could be bigger for readability.

Revisions based on this critique

I agree that the text could be bigger.  Especially because the graphic will likely be smaller when added into the final product, I inreased the font size for months.
